Frequently Asked Yankee Candle Questions.
How do I keep my candle looking its best?
Candles by their very nature do not burn best in a draft. If you've ever done this you'll notice the flame flicking about, this may allow the flame to touch the glass hence blackening it.
Keep the wax out of direct sunlight, the wax can become discoloured. This isn't unique to Yankee this applies to all candles. As we've found to our cost, if you leave taper candles in direct sunlight, and especially in a consevatory, they will warp and bend. This is quite amusing for children, but renders the candle unusable as it's bent over double!
Why does the wick get a big black lump on the top?
Carbon builds up on the wick as it burns. The answer to this, and many other burning questions (excuse the pun) is to keep the wick trimmed. We can't state this enough. We have had numerous questions on candle burning and this is an easy solution. Ideally trim in when the wax is cold, but of course this isn't always possible. The reason we suggest this is that it stops the bit you clip off falling into the wax pool - thats the area of moutlen wax burning around the wick, which gives the candle its scent. If you're anthing like us you light the candle, sit down, relax then after a while you notice the flame is far higher than it should be. Of course, by this time the wax has already melted. So, what we do is blow out the flame and clip the wick with a pair of scissors. Just make sure the wick isn't lower than the wax line!
Can I refill the Jar once the candle is finished?
Not with wax, no. The reason for this is that during the burning process the glass is weakened and wouldn't withstand more intense heat.
However, we find the large jars are especially useful for storing things in. Something I'll mention here, whilst I think of it. Remember not to pick the jar up by the lid as it just pops off and you're left with the lid, and the jar and its contents all over the floor!
If I wanted to use my empty Yankee Candle jar for storage, how can I remove the metal wick base?
This is a relatively easy process. Once all wax is removed, simply pour in enough rubbing alcohol to cover the base and allow the jar to sit for a few days. The rubbing alcohol should soften the glue and release the base. It is important that you allow the rubbing alcohol time to work and that you don't pry at the base with your hand or any object.
Why does it say to discontinue using the candle when a half inch of wax remains?
The glass can get hot on the bottom as the flame nears the base of the jar and most of the wax has been consumed. When this instruction is followed the glass will not get too hot. For your safety, we also recommend burning all candles on heat resistant surfaces.
Why do Yankee Candles discontinue me favourite scents?
The Lord only knows!
General Tips..
Mainly common sense, but worth pointing out none the less.
Never leave candles burning unattended. Even when in a jar there's an obvious fire hazzard.
Never burn a candle near flammable items such as curtains or on a shelf that has another shelf above it etc.
Keep well out of reach of children and pets, it only takes a second for a child or pet to lunge towards a burining candle. I have no idea why they do this, but do it they do!
Remove all packaging before lighting.
Keep wicked trimmed to 1/8" at all times (that's quite short!)
Specific Advice for Candle Types From Yankee Candles.
Jars Yankee Candle Jars
Handle with care; glass containers are fragile. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when removing or replacing the lid. Do not use if the jar is cracked, chipped or scratched. Do not refill with wax.
Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jar. The jar may become hot. Handle carefully.
If smoking occurs, check for drafts or high traffic areas, which may cause flame to flicker and smoke. Also, be sure that the wick is no longer than 1/8". If it is, extinguish, trim to 1/8", and relight.
To minimize wax left on the sides of the jar, burn 3 hours at a time; it is normal for some wax to be left. The amount will vary per color, fragrance and burning conditions.
Prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface by discontinuing use when 1/2" of wax remains. Only burn in a suitable holder, or on a plate or other fire and heat resistant surface.
Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid.
Scented Tea Lights Yankee Candle Tealights
Do not burn in an enclosed space like a potpourri pot. For this purpose use Yankee® Tart® Warmers (unscented tea lights), and be sure the burner is well ventilated.
If wick smokes or builds up carbon, extinguish flame and remove the carbon before relighting.
Samplers® Votive Candles Yankee Candle Samplers
Burn only in an appropriate holder.
Do not burn freestanding.
Tarts® Wax Potpourri Yankee Candle Wax Tarts
Place Tarts® Wax Potpourri in the top of a dry potpourri burner and never add water.
Light one of the unscented Tarts® Warmers (never use scented tea lights) for a controlled low flame made especially for potpourri burners. When melted, the wax potpourri will release its wonderful fragrance.
To change fragrance, extinguish the Tarts® Warmer flame and allow the melted Tarts® Wax Potpourri to harden. Gently tap the sides of the burner and in most cases the wax will pop out. Discard the melted wax potpourri or store in a plastic bag for reuse.
If using an electric potpourri pot, we recommend that you use one that is UL listed for
